The 2016 Athletics, Swimming and Powerlifting National Open was held in Medellin, Colombia, from 23-27 November, with Paralympic swimming champion Carlos Serrano and Rio 2016 athletics gold medallist Mauricio Valencia competing.

The event, which was organised by the Colombian Paralympic Committee (CPC) and took place at the Atanasio Girardot Sports Complex, helped make up a team ahead of next year’s Sao Paulo Youth Parapan American Games, Nottwil IPC Athletics Junior World Championships and London World Para Athletics Championships.

A total of 600 athletes from Colombia, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica and Ecuador participated, including many of the ones who competed at last September’s Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Paralympic medallists Luis Lucumi, Nelson Crispin, Moises Fuentes, Martha Liliana Hernandez and Maritza Arango were amongst them. At Rio 2016, Colombia rounded off their best Paralympic performance ever by winning 17 medals, including two golds, five silvers and 10 bronzes.
