USA’s Paralympic champion kicks off series on world’s best riders 17 May 2018

PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games double gold medallist Brenna Huckaby is the first athlete featured in the new ‘Para snowboard in numbers’ series.

Find out the numbers, facts and statistics which make up the world’s best athletes in the lead up to the 2018-19 season – which will include the World Para Snowboard Championships in Pyha, Finland.

1 – The number of Paralympic Games Huckaby has competed in. Her debut was at the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Paralympics.

2 – The age of Huckaby’s daughter Lilah.

4 – The number of medals Huckaby has won at World Para Snowboard Championships. She started out with a gold and a silver at the 2015 Worlds in La Molina, Spain, before claiming two more golds at the 2017 edition in Big White, Canada.

12 – The day of her first Paralympic medal. On 12 March 2018 Huckaby won the women’s snowboard cross SB-LL1 at the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Games. Four days later the USA rider took her second gold, this time in the women’s banked slalom SB-LL1.

22 – Huckaby’s age. She was born on 22 January 1986 in Baton Rouge, Lousiana.

2013 – The year she began competing while training at the USA National Ability Centre in Utah. Huckaby had never seen a mountain full of snow before the amputation of her right leg due to a bone cancer in 2010.

The USA rider posed in the famous swimsuit edition of ‘Sports Illustrated’ magazine in 2018. “I wanted to show anybody out there who's dealing with something that they can overcome it and I wanted to be that role model for women with disabilities,” she said.
