Paralympic Games set to go digital for Beijing 2022

Following on most digital Paralympics of all-time in Tokyo, Beijing 2022 will allow billions of people worldwide the opportunity to show their support for the Paralympic Winter Games by empowering fans to be content creators. 

“For Beijing 2022, we are enabling everyone from athletes to TV viewers to become Paralympic creators with GIFs, stickers and frames that they can use in their own content. Social media is not just about our official profiles, but also about empowering our fandom and giving them the tools to express themselves,” said Natalia Dannenberg-Spreier, IPC Head of Brand and Engagement. 

“There’s an increased interest from fans about the Paralympic Games. In the last 12 months, the number of followers on the Paralympics’ social media channels has grown 118%, reaching a total of more than 4,218,000 fans worldwide across all platforms. There’s no doubt that Beijing 2022 will break all records in engagement for a Paralympic Winter Games”, said Jonas Oliveira, IPC Head of Content. 

Show Your Support 

Fans will once again be able to engage with the Paralympic Winter Games across their own social media channels.  

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) is working closely with Giphy and Tenor to create GIFs, Clips and Stickers which can be used across their own accounts by searching “Winter Paralympics”. Each day, dozens of GIFs will be created from the very best moments and fans can use stickers of the Paralympic mascot Shuey Rhon Rhon. 

The IPC has also launched the Tenor Virtual Ultra experience, enabling Paralympians to create their own GIFs before the Games have even begun, bringing the raw passion of athletes to their own social media channels.  

Twitter is once again supporting the Games with hashtag emojis, including #WinterParalympics, #Paralympics, #Gold, #Silver, #Bronze and all sports.  

Fans can also transform their profile picture on Facebook and Twitter with a special Frame. 

TikTok hub 

A Paralympic hub on TikTok will allow fans to engage using #WinterParalympics and reveal top posts and the accounts to follow. 

In addition, the IPC TikTok account, which now has over 1.2 million followers, will air a series of live streams from behind the scenes, to reveal what life is like at the Paralympic Games, and what it takes to be a Paralympian. 

Home fans 

The IPC will also be running a series of live streams on Douyin too, bringing the personalities of China’s top Paralympians to the platform. In addition, the Paralympic Games Weibo channel will provide exciting imagery from across the Games. 

Live Streams 

More than 300 hours of live sport as well as clips and highlights will be shown on the Paralympics YouTube channel , as well as a number of events available on the Paralympics Facebook page. This content as well as schedules and results will be integrated into the Google and YouTube search experience.  

All live streams will also be available at paralympic.org and the Paralympics LIVE app, available for iOS and Android, also in selected territories. Daily highlights of the competition will be made available on the Paralympics Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and Facebook accounts.  

Where agreed with national broadcasters, geo restrictions may be applied to all the above.
