The people of Toronto and Canada,

Athletes, Officials, Distinguished Guests

Good evening, bonsoir, bienvenue and welcome to Toronto for the Opening of the fifth Parapan American Games.

Tonight’s Opening Ceremony acts as the starting gun to the most important period in the history of the Paralympic Movement in the Americas.

Over the next 14 months, the Americas will stage two monumental para-sport events. Toronto 2015 and Rio 2016 will redefine how people in this continent think about themselves and how they think about others.

Through fantastic high performance sport, para-athletes will make you think differently about sport and what is achievable in life. Through maximising their abilities, they will challenge what you believe is possible and inspire you to follow your dreams.

Even before the action starts, the Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games are already record breaking.

They are the biggest ever, with more than 1,600 athletes from 28 countries.

All 15 sports are qualifiers for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, and every athlete arrives here ready to test their body to the absolute limits.

These Games are a catalyst for even greater things.

Many athletes who made their first international appearance at previous Parapan American Games return to compete here as world or Paralympic medallists.

I am confident that Toronto 2015 will have a similar effect. Over the coming days you will see many future Proud Paralympians in action, and some will go on to be Paralympic champions.

Not only are the athletes the best prepared ever for this event, but so is the spectacular city of Toronto.

Never in the history of the Parapan American Games has one city shown such dedication and commitment to this event and the legacies it can leave.

I would like to pay huge credit to the Toronto 2015 Organising Committee, City of Toronto, Government of Ontario and Government of Canada for their unprecedented support.

These Games have already had a huge impact on this city and its surrounding area.

Accessible venues have been built with legacy in mind, and I am sure this impact will only be magnified over the coming days, weeks and years.

The future for Toronto and the Paralympic Movement in the Americas is extremely bright.

Our agreement with PASO secures the future of these Games. This event can send a message to the world that Toronto is ready to stage even bigger sporting events in the future.

We all feel at home here in Toronto. You and thousands of smiling volunteers have welcomed us into your city.

I wish everyone, especially the athletes, the very best of luck. Play fair and most of all have fun.

I now have the honour of inviting His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston to proclaim open the Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games.

Habitantes de Toronto y de Canadá,

Atletas, funcionarios y apreciados invitados:

Les doy una cordial bienvenida a Toronto para la inauguración de la quinta edición de los Juegos Parapanamericanos.

La ceremonia de inauguración de esta tarde servirá como punto de partida de la etapa más importante en la historia del Movimiento Paralímpico de las Américas.

Durante los próximos 14 meses, las Américas serán el escenario de dos eventos paradeportivos de enorme envergadura. Toronto 2015 y Río 2016 van a redefinir la forma en que las personas de este continente se ven a sí mismas y cómo ven al prójimo.

Con fabulosas actuaciones deportivas de alto rendimiento, los atletas con discapacidad van a cambiar nuestra forma de pensar sobre el deporte y lo que se puede conseguir en la vida. Desarrollando al máximo sus capacidades, harán que nos replanteemos lo que creíamos que era posible y nos motivarán para perseguir nuestros sueños.

Los Juegos Parapanamericanos Toronto 2015 ya han batido récords incluso antes de que comience la emoción.

Son los Juegos más grandes, con más de 1600 atletas provenientes de 28 países.

Los 15 deportes representados sirven como clasificación para los Juegos Paralímpicos de Río 2016 y todos los atletas han venido preparados para intentar poner sus cuerpos al límite.

Estos Juegos son un catalizador para cosas aún mejores.

Muchos de los atletas que se citaron por primera vez a nivel internacional en ediciones anteriores de los Juegos Parapanamericanos regresan para competir aquí en calidad de medallistas mundiales o paralímpicos.

Tengo la certeza de que Toronto 2015 surtirá un efecto similar. Durante los próximos días van a ver en acción a muchos futuros paralímpicos orgullosos y algunos de ellos se convertirán en campeones paralímpicos.

Y no solo los atletas se han preparado lo mejor posible para este evento, también lo ha hecho la ciudad espectacular de Toronto.

En la historia de los Juegos Parapanamericanos, nunca una ciudad había mostrado tal dedicación y compromiso para este evento y los legados que pueda dejar.

Quisiera reconocer el enorme mérito que tienen el Comité Organizador Toronto 2015, la ciudad de Toronto, el Gobierno de Ontario y el Gobierno de Canadá, por un apoyo sin precedentes.

Estos Juegos ya han causado un impacto increíble sobre la ciudad y sus alrededores.

Se han construido sedes accesibles teniendo en cuenta los legados y estoy seguro de que este impacto irá ampliándose según pasen los días, las semanas y los años.

El futuro de Toronto y del Movimiento Paralímpico de las Américas brilla con intensidad.

Nuestro acuerdo con la ODEPA asegura el futuro de estos Juegos. Este evento le enviará un mensaje al mundo afirmando que Toronto está listo para realizar eventos aún más grandes en el futuro

En Toronto todos nos sentimos como en casa. Ustedes y miles de sonrientes voluntarios nos han dado la bienvenida a su ciudad.

Les deseo a todos, especialmente a los atletas, la mejor de las suertes. Jueguen limpio y, ante todo, diviértanse.
