Swimming was part of the treatment for her condition. She later discovered Para sport through fellow Brazilian Para athlete Francisco Avelino, whom her father picked up one day while working as a bus driver.

Injuries
In September 2014 she had an operation on her left shoulder after she was diagnosed with bursitis and tendinitis. Two months later she underwent surgery on her right shoulder to correct the same problem. She returned to training in January 2015. (globo.com, 30 Jan 2015)

RECLASSIFICATION
In 2017 she was reclassified from an S4 athlete to S3 after her condition worsened. She also switched from training in the pool twice a day to just once, while increasing the amount of mental training sessions, such as meditation, to twice a day. "I couldn't finish my training sessions because of the pain and muscle weakness. Over training caused a lot of muscle fatigue during training and problems with the diaphragm. Doctors told me that if I got close to over training, I should be careful because I could lose my mobility."
