Sport specific information

When and where did you begin this sport?
He began swimming at age five and started competing in 2010.
Why this sport?
His parents wanted all of their children to learn to swim for water safety reasons, but initially thought his impairment would prevent him from being able to. However, one day while his mother was in the family pool with other children, he jumped in and swam to her. "I guess he sees the rest of the kids doing it, and he wants to do it too," his mother said.

General interest

To compete at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo. (, 12 Apr 2018)
He was born without legs and only one complete arm. Because he was adopted, doctors do not know the origin of his impairment but suspect it may be due to medication his biological mother took while pregnant. (, 11 Jul 2011)
Other information
He is of Mexican origin, and was adopted a few days after birth by Ann and Ed Marsh in Guntersville, AL, United States of America. The couple have two biological children, 10 adopted children, and have fostered more than 50 other children. Many of the children joined the Guntersville swim team. "From the time we get 'em, she [Ann] sticks 'em in the pool," says Ed. (, 11 Jul 2010)
