Impairment
In September 2010 he was serving with the United States Marine Corps in Sangin, Afghanistan. He was part of a 12-person clearing patrol and he was the last to enter an empty building. He stepped on an improvised explosive device [IED] in a hallway. He lost his right leg below the knee and suffered compartment syndrome in his left leg. AMPUTEE FIRST
In January 2013 he became the first amputee to reach the summit of Mount Vinson in Antarctica. "When I made it to the summit I soaked in the view and started to cry. It was an amazing feeling to have accomplished something that I couldn't even fathom or picture in my head before. I thought, 'If I can do this, I can do anything I set my mind to.
