Sport specific information

When and where did you begin this sport?
His mother, who competed in swimming in her youth, introduced him to the water at age six months. He grew up swimming, but did not join a club until age 10.
Why this sport?
His middle school coach noticed his ability and work ethic, and suggested he begin competing in para-swimming meets. He was reluctant at first, preferring to compete against able-bodied swimmers. "At that age and at that time, I just didn't see the value of the places that it [para-swimming] could take me, or the opportunities it could open up for me." In 2013 he finally decided to switch, and competed in his first para-swimming competition.
