Sport specific information

When and where did you begin this sport?
He began cycling and swimming when he was in high school. He took up running at age 26 in Spilimbergo, Italy.
Why this sport?
He loved the competitiveness of the sport, as well as the team environment. Having previously competed in swimming, he took up Para athletics following rehabilitation and a meeting with an orthopaedist. "I had the accident in 1992 and I did rehabilitation with physiotherapy and swimming. Already they had seen that I was good as an athlete. I did a lot of years of swimming, but the races were all out of the region and getting around was expensive. So I gave up competing. Thanks to a work colleague, who introduced me to Sergio Tirelli, an orthopaedist from Udine, I started to get back in shape because I was a ball of lard in those years. I started doing physiotherapy and going to the gym again. They saw that there was something I could do and they summoned me to the pre-London 2012 rally."

Impairment
Both his legs were amputated below the knee after he was involved in a farm accident in 1992. "I remember everything about the accident. It was April 1992, it was hot. I remember that my father and I had to prepare the seedbed in the field. Each time, as he worked away as a truck driver, I took the opportunity to be with him while he was doing some work, or right behind his tractor. Bad luck had it that that day I fell between the cutter and the tractor and lost my legs." Other information
SCHOOL LIFE
He had mixed experiences at school in regards to how other students reacted to his impairment. "In elementary school, especially in a small town, we all knew each other. They didn't consider my impairment much, in fact they invited me to play football, volleyball or take a bike ride. What bothered me most was my time at middle school. I saw how bad people can be in my time there. High school was nice but demanding. The boys, knowing who I was and what I was doing, always gave me a hand. Those were the best years."
