Dutch upset Germans to take European gold

It marks the fifth time the Dutch women have won the European title, as they were led by top scorer Inge Huitzing, who recorded 24 points.

The Netherlands escaped with a dramatic 57-56 victory against Paralympic champions Germany to win gold on Saturday (6 July) at the IWBF Wheelchair Basketball European Championships in Frankfurt, Germany.

It marks the fifth time the Dutch women have won the European title, as they were led by top scorer Inge Huitzing, who recorded 24 points. Cher Korver chipped in 18 points for the Netherlands.

The Germans attempted to take the lead just before the final buzzer, but proved unsuccessful, even with 28 points from Marina Mohnen.

Great Britain 60, France 39 (women’s bronze-medal game)

Great Britain’s women’s team won their eighth bronze medal at the European Championships behind 27 points by leading scorer Amy Conroy. Emelie Menard led France with 12 points.

Spain 59, Turkey 39 (women’s fifth-place game)

Spain got out early against Turkey and never looked back, pulling away to a 59-39 victory behind top scorer Victoria Alonso Vilarino who finished with 18 points. Aliye Kocasoy led Turkey with 22 points.

Israel 58, Italy 39 (women’s seventh-place game)

After three quarters, this game was evenly matched, but the Israelis broke away heading into the final quarter to take seventh place and leave the Italians winless in Frankfrut.

Moran Samuel led Israel with 27 points in the game.
