The nominations for July 2019’s Americas ‘Athlete of the Month’ poll have been announced. The public are invited to vote for their winner via the Americas Paralympic Committee homepage until Thursday (15 August).

Fabio Torres, Colombia, powerlifting
Claimed bronze for a second consecutive time at a World Championships thanks to a 225kg lift in the men’s up to 97kg.

Gustavo Fernandez, Argentina, wheelchair tennis
Beat Japanese legend Shingo Kunieda 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the Wimbledon final and is within grasp of claiming the calendar Grand Slam if he also wins the US Open.

Juan Carlos Garrido, Chile, powerlifting
Secured bronze in the men’s up to 59kg at Nur-Sultan 2019 after clearing the bar at 184kg.

Lenia Ruvalcaba, Mexico, judo
Returned to the top of the podium in the women’s up to 70kg at the International Qualifier in Fort Wayne, USA, following a hard-fought victory over Brazilian Alana Martins.

US women’s goalball team
Propelled by the home crowd, the US team secured a spot at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics after making it to the final of the International Qualifier in Fort Wayne.

Nominations are compiled from submissions by National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) from across the continent.

The 2019 Americas Athlete of the Month winners are:

• January – Johanna Sossa and Johana Martinez, Colombia, wheelchair tennis
• February – Rebeca Valenzuela Alvarez, Mexico, athletics
• March – Matias Pino, Chile, table tennis
• April – Daniel Martins, Brazil, athletics
• May – Sherman Guity, Costa Rica, athletics
• June – Luis Flores, Chile, table tennis
