In late December, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) learned of the sad passing of Dr Karl Quade, Vice President of the National Paralympic Committee of Germany and long-time supporter of the IPC.
For more than 40 years, Dr Quade was a dedicated advocate for the Paralympic Movement, first as a successful Para athlete, and later as Chef de Mission for Team Germany and long serving Vice President of the German Paralympic Sports Association (DBS).
Across his career, Dr Quade participated in 18 Paralympic Games. He made his debut at the New York and Stoke Mandeville 1984 Paralympic Games in standing volleyball, winning a silver medal, and later went on to compete at the Seoul 1988 Games, securing a gold medal. He also represented West Germany in Para athletics where he finished fourth in the men’s shot put (A6/A8/A9/L6 classifications). From 1996 onward, he guided German athletes at numerous Paralympic Games in his role as Chef de Mission.
IPC President Andrew Parsons said: “With Karl’s passing, we have lost a dear friend, a passionate leader, and a steadfast champion of the Paralympic Movement in Germany and around the world.
“Affectionately known as ‘Mr Paralympics’ for his unwavering dedication, Karl was a familiar and respected presence at IPC General Assemblies and membership gatherings. He played an active role in the IPC’s democratic processes and consistently represented Germany with integrity, commitment, and pride.”
Dr Quade was highly regarded among National Paralympic Committees worldwide and worked tirelessly to strengthen international cooperation. His deep expertise, compassion, and close connection to athletes helped shape Para sport both in Germany and globally. In recognition of his contributions, he received the Federal Cross of Merit in 2008.
Beyond sport, Dr Quade built a distinguished career in sports science and public policy, holding senior positions at the Federal Institute of Sports Science and within Germany’s Interior Ministry.
