The nominations for February 2020’s Americas ‘Athlete of the Month’ have been announced. The public are invited to vote for their winner via the Americas Paralympic Committee homepage until Friday (13 March).

Gersson Mejia, Guatemala, taekwondo

Took gold at the Mexico Para Taekwondo Open after defeating home crowd favourite Luis Enrique Campos in the men’s up to 61kg K41.

Herbert Aceituno, El Salvador, powerlifting

Enjoyed another successful month by taking bronze in the men’s up to 59kg at the World Cup in Manchester, Great Britain, with a 170kg lift.

Joe Pleban, USA, snowboard

Had an impressive performance at the recent 2020 World Para Snowboard NORAM held from 12-13 February in Big White, Canada. He grabbed double silvers in snowboard-cross.

Maria Antonieta Ortiz, Chile, powerlifting

Won gold at the Manchester World Cup following a great performance in the women’s up to 79kg, lifting 116kg.

Vanessa Cristina de Souza, Brazil, athletics

Won the Sevilla Marathon in the women’s T54 after clocking 1:40.23.

Nominations are compiled from submissions by National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) from across the continent.

The 2020 Americas Athlete of the Month winner is:

• January – Luis Flores, Chile, table tennis
