Milano Cortina 2026 top moments: China
China topped the overall medals table for the second straight Paralympic Winter Games 09 Apr 2026
The Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games featured 79 medal events across six sports – Para alpine skiing, Para biathlon, Para cross-country skiing, Para ice hockey, Para snowboard and wheelchair curling.
With 44 medals, China finished atop the overall medals table for the second straight Paralympic Winter Games. Four years after their home success in Beijing, Chinese athletes won medals in all six sports, cementing their status as powerhouses.
Here are China’s top moments from the Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games.
Meng Wang and Jinqiao Yang make wheelchair curling history
Meng Wang and Jinqiao Yang became the inaugural Paralympic champions in the wheelchair curling mixed doubles event. Twenty years after the sport was introduced at Torino 2006, the mixed doubles event made its debut at Milano Cortina 2026.
Wang and Yang beat Republic of Korea’s Hyejin Baek and Yongsuk Lee 9–7 in the gold medal game at the Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium. Latvia's Polina Rozkova and Agris Lasmans took bronze.
“Very, very proud, very, very honoured, also very grateful,” Wang said after the game, adding that she is grateful to the people who have helped the athletes along the way.
China also took silver in the mixed team event. The team has finished on the wheelchair curling podium at every Games since PyeongChang 2018.
Jiayun Cai and Yue Wang contribute to China’s medal haul in Tesero
At the Tesero Cross-Country Skiing Stadium, China finished with an impressive 15 medals in Para biathlon and 13 in Para cross-country skiing.
Jiayun Cai and Yue Wang led the medal haul in Tesero, with Cai claiming three Para biathlon gold medals and Wang claiming five medals, including two golds, across the two sports.
“I’m super happy because I’ve been competing since 2016. It’s nearly 10 years,” Wang said after winning her first gold of the Games in the Para biathlon women’s sprint vision-impaired event.
“In 2022 in the Beijing Games, I didn't win the medal I expected. During the past four years I've been practising every day with the help of my partner.
“I finally got the medal here for the Chinese team and my first gold medal. It was super exciting emotions.”
China take Para ice hockey bronze for second straight Games
China’s Para ice hockey programme was launched just five years before Beijing 2022. Four years ago, the team surprised fans when they finished with bronze at their debut Games.
At Milano Cortina 2026, China proved once again that they are one of the teams to beat in Para ice hockey. They came from behind to beat Czechia 3–2 in the bronze medal match.
With the game tied 2–2 in the third period, Jintao Tian scored the winner at Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena. Tian had also put China on the scoreboard in the first period, just after Czechia scored twice for an early lead.
“It feels great. After so many years of hard work, working as a team, we were able to keep fighting and persevere,” Tian said. “Even when we were two goals behind, we managed to equalise and then win. I’m very, very happy.”
