Para sport in review: February 2017

2017 World Para Snowboard Championships

The last major event before the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games took place in Big White, Canada, and featured 80 of the world’s best snowboarders.

The Netherlands’ Chris Vos and Bibian Mentel-Spee, Finland’s Matti Suur and the USA’s Brenna Huckaby finished as the most decorated athletes with two golds each.

2017 World Para Nordic Skiing Championships

Ukraine won 47 medals overall, including 19 golds, and topped the medals table at this event in Finsterau, Germany. They were followed by Canada and the USA (tied with seven medals each, including four gold).

Para Bobsleigh World Championships

Latvia’s Arturs Klots won gold at the second edition of this event in St. Moritz, Switzerland. Canada’s Lonnie Bissonnette and Great Britain’s Corie Mapp completed the podium. Full review.

Para Snowboard World Cup

La Molina, Spain, held the season’s third World Cup from 14-18 February. Austria’s Reinhold Schett and the Netherlands’ Lisa Bunschoten were some of the best athletes, securing multiple wins.

Al Ain 2017 World Shooting Para Sport World Cup

The sport’s 2017 season got underway in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. Slovakia’s Veronica Vadovicova shined by achieving four wins, whilst Kuwait’s Atef Aldousari topped the podium at a World Cup for the first time ever.

IWAS Wheelchair Fencing World Cup

Italy’s Beatrice Vio won double gold in Eger, Hungary, only days after winning the prestigious 2017 Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability Award.

Para alpine skiing Europa Cups

Poland’s Maciej Krezel secured wins in all four visually impaired races at two Europa Cups in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, and Zagreb-Sljeme, Croatia. Full review.

Tokyo Marathon

Japan’s Sho Watanabe and USA’s Amanda McGrory were the fastest wheelchair racers in the men’s and women’s events in the Japanese capital city on 26 February. Full review.

International Tennis Federation 1 Rotterdam

Great Britain’s Gordon Reid successfully defended his wheelchair tennis title in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, after beating France’s Nicolas Peifer in the final. Full review.

Osaka Cup

The Dutch women’s wheelchair basketball team claimed the Osaka Cup following a win over Australia in the final in Osaka, Japan. Review can be found here.

Malmo Open

Portugal’s goalball club Sporting CP claimed gold ahead of Sweden’s heavy favourites FIFH Malmo. The event took place in Malmo, Sweden.

Para ice hockey exhibition games

Germany beat Norway for the first time in 19 years at a series of exhibition games held in Skien, Norway. Full results.
